About – Description
A large amount of treasure from a sunken ship is sitting on the ocean floor just waiting for the brave Ocean Raiders to find it – but it won’t be an easy mission! In the course of your adventure you’ll need to battle huge storms, swim against raging whirlpools and beat your competition in this amazing addition adventure game. Plus of course you’ll master one and two-digit addition along the way!
Why not make math time family time; a chance to engage with your kids, away from tablets, phones and gadgets. Educational yet great fun too, Ocean Raiders is an addition board game full of colorful characters aimed at children of grade 1 ages and above.
Best Suited For Children Ages 5+
Ocean Raiders is a game for 2 to 4 players so is great for family groups and friends, or to play in the classroom. It’s a treasure hunting underwater adventure involving basic arithmetic so it is best suited to older children who are comfortable with numbers.
Skill – Complexity
Although this game is fairly easy to get to grips with (and is simple to teach too), it is based around one and two-digit addition so children will need to have a basic grasp of mathematics.
Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions
Setting up
Inside the box you’ll find:
- Special 10 faced dice with numbers from 0 to 9
- 1 ocean board with custom number layout
- 4 diver coins
- 1 rule book
- 1 Game themed wall poster
- 4 write and wipe logic slates
Unfold the board and lay it flat on a table or on the floor, then have each player sit around it. Next, players should choose which color piece they would like to play with, and put it on the start square ready to begin. Players should then take it in turns to roll the 10-sided dice, and the player with the highest number starts.
Object of the game
Each player must roll the dice, add up the numbers and beat their opponent to the finish (sector 49). The first player to get there wins the game!
Playing Instructions
This game is very similar in its mechanics and style to the traditional and well-loved game “Snakes and Ladders”. Each square on the board represents a number and players must take it in turns to roll the specially designed 10-sided dice to give a second number. Add the number on the dice to the number of your current position until you finally reach the treasure. But look out along the way for all the dangers you might come across lying in wait under the ocean – hit one and you’ll end up going backwards!
Versions – Editions
There has only been one edition of this game and no further versions.
Likes & Dislikes
Ocean Raiders is a great game for 1st graders who have just begun to learn addition. It’s perfect for playing at home but would also work very well in the classroom as other than learning the rules it doesn’t require much supervision. Bold, colorful and with eye-catching graphics, although the game is aimed at children it can go on for quite a while, especially if you keep getting caught. With this in mind, it’s possible that children who find adding up numbers difficult may start to lose interest.
Final Thoughts
Ocean Raiders is a brilliant way to boost your children’s math skills without them even noticing! Good quality well designed, it’s ideal for both boys and girls of mixed ages from 5 years and over.
Imaginative and engaging, it sets the scene by beginning with a little background story which really gets your child into the spirit of the game and makes them feel like they’re part of it. As Ocean Raiders is so similar to “Snakes and Ladders” it has a familiar feel to it so it’s very easy to pick up.
Awards and Honors
Ocean Raiders has received a Family Choice Award for Grade 1 and Above. The publisher also won Best Game Makers in 2014.
