hoot owl hoot board game box

About – Description

The young owls have ventured out to explore the deep, dark forest at night but they’ve had fun and now it’s time to go home. Can you help them fly back to their nest before dawn breaks?

A fantastic kids educational game that’s all about working together, Hoot Owl Hoot was launched in 2010.

Hoot Owl Hoot is a children’s game played by 2-4 players and involves playing a color card that helps your owl move forward. Sun cards mean you’re one step closer to daylight so you’ll need to hurry up and get them home!

It’s a cooperative game which means everyone works together on one team to achieve a common goal.

Who’s it best suited for?

A very quick game to play, it only takes around 15 minutes from start to finish so it’s ideal for young children aged 4 and over.

Skill – Complexity

This is very easy game of low complexity aimed at children aged 4 years and over. It’s simply about taking turns and being a member of the team. There’s no heavy strategy or counting involved so it’s perfect for all abilities.

Setting Up –

Inside the box you’ll find:

  • Game board
  • 1 sun token
  • 6 owl tokens

  • 36 color cards

To set up the game, put the sun token on the first part of the sun track, with three owls on the starting spaces of the owl track. Then give three cards to each player.

Object of the game –

The idea of the game is that you work together as a team to get all your baby owls back to their nest before the sun rises and a new day begins. But if the sun comes up and they’re not all back, you lose!

Playing Instructions –

As this is all about teamwork there’s no secrecy in this game……..

Players must keep their cards facing upwards in front of them so that they can work together to decide the best way to move. If a player has a sun card, they must discard it and move the sun token one space when it’s their turn. If the player has color cards only, they can discard any one color card and move any of the owls to the next open space of that color. If an owl “flies” over another owl that’s already occupying a space of that color on its way to the next open space, every player makes a hooting sound!

Versions – Editions

The “Flieg mit, kleine Eule!” multilingual edition of the game was launched in 2013 as well as a Russian version in the same year. The languages in the multilingual edition are German, French and Italian.

Likes & Dislikes

The game is simple to grasp and young children will love the cooperative aspect as there’s no arguing about winners or losers! The rules of the game are perfectly geared towards teaching children to strategize, and the difficulty can be increased by adding extra owls to the board at the start of the game…..

The cards themselves however are quite small and thin, so may not last long in the hands of small kids.

Final Thoughts

With its beautiful illustrations and bright, bold colors it’s easy to see what makes this game so appealing. The requirement of some basic strategy is enough to stimulate primary school aged children without overwhelming them and is fun for adults to play along too.

Ideal for teaching kids the art of gameplay and teamwork, this one is perfect for fun family afternoons.
