About – Description
Candyland originated in 1949 and was designed by Eleanor Abbot. The game is extremely simple in design and is ideal for children as it is suited for ages 3 and over and up to four people can play.
It has a 30 minute playing time which makes it ideal for younger players.
Best Suited For Children and Families
Candyland is a game filled with colors and simple play and so, it is aimed at young children, where they can begin the process of learning to embrace board games.
For older children, it’s a game that they could play alone but for children aged 3, they will need guidance from their parents, turning it into a great chance for the family to get together.
Skill – Complexity
This is by no means a game that requires a huge amount of skill and it has a low complexity level due to the age that this game is suited to. Players do not require any reading skills while they will require a small amount of counting skill.
There’s no strategy involved and so, players roll, spin and move their way around the board……
Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions
The board consists of a winding track that is made up of red, green, blue, yellow, orange and purple spaces.
Once the board is laid out, the cards are shuffled and placed in a pile face down. The gingerbread markers are then placed on the starting square.
The youngest player goes first and draws a card, requiring them to move to the nearest space of that color. As players move around the board, they can take shortcuts in order to complete it faster. If players land on a licorice space, they lose a turn.
Players continue to move until they reach the end where they are met with Candy Castle. The first player to arrive there is deemed to be the winner.
Versions – Editions
While the game has been released in many countries around the world, there have been many different editions released throughout the years. This includes a 65th Anniversary Edition, A Disney Princess Edition, Chocolate Edition and a Disney Theme Park Edition.
Likes & Dislikes
The colors, simplicity and the way in which this gets children into board games are all recognized as positive features of this game.
As it’s a game of luck with no skill, it means that even the youngest can win and that means that they will remain interested in the game.
Some feel as though more players should be able to play the game and they think that the design and idea are almost too simple for some children.
Final Thoughts
A thrilling game for children who are new to board games, Candyland provides small children with the chance to explore the world of game playing.
The quick set up and easy design appeals to children and that keeps them hooked. The lack of strategy and skill ensures that children can win just as much as adults and that certainly keeps the competition up.
