scene it board game

About – Description

Scene It? the board and DVD game first hit the shelves selling its first edition in 2002. The first edition was geared towards general movie trivia questions, and now there’s many editions from comedy to Twilight Saga.

Screenlife was the original makers of Scene It?, however, Paramount sacked Screenlife and stopped investing in that as you can see in the GeekWire article here. Mattel are the present manufacturers.

As with all trivia board games it primarily involves answering questions. The Scene It? board game uses two vehicles (choices) both the DVD and question cards, that are driven by players rolling two dice first (then make your board move) and follow answering either a DVD or card question.

Who’s it best suited for?

It’s best suited for those that enjoy trivia questions that involves movies or their favorite TV or movie theme.

It’s a family and party fun thing. Nothing less or more, really.

Film buffs love a game, like a chocoholic loves chocolate fondue.

Many of the game board nerds are likely to state that dice should not be rolled with a trivia board game, or at least not before answering a question. They have a few other criticisms as well, but the point is that Scene It? is not a serious game, it’s purely for fun and to let serious go for a while.

Skill – Complexity

The skill required in Scene It? is movie knowledge of course. There’s nothing else complex about playing that’s not just part of the fun aspect provided in the rules and instructions, which is just a few ways of making it more enjoyable and interesting on route to getting a winner.

Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions

Just like many other trivia board games you’ll have a board, 2 dice, movers and question cards. The difference with Scene It? compared to many other trivia games is a DVD will also be included that is primarily used for questions.

You’re obviously going to need to make sure you have a DVD player before setting up.

Getting around the board to the finish line with a winner involves the roll of both dice (numbered, and symbol dice) and then move to the next spot, and take on the challenge from the category die. The various challenge options that a player can pick up from the symbol die makes the game more fun.

The roll of the category die decides a DVD challenge, card question, buzz card, all play (all players can answer from the DVD) and so on……

Buzz cards can be taken when the die falls on the buzz card symbol which can help you move forward or may make you move back with bonuses or losses, so the buzz cards add an extra twist on the game.

You may use Scene It in party play mode which is questions from the DVD only and no game board, but we never did try it without the board. This is fun for the family to just watch and keep shouting out answers for fun without any clear winner.

That covers the basics and a bit more.

Versions – Editions

There are various editions. The first edition is for movies which is about general movie and TV trivia questions, which may be difficult for some players that don’t have the knowledge.

The editions for various movies like Harry Potter, and famous TV series like Friends or a Scene It? for the 1980’s are excellent if all the players have some knowledge on them.

Final Thoughts

Scene It? board games are without a doubt great trivia quiz games for families to play on a winters night and at holiday times.

It is not so much for the serious trivia buffs, but more for the movie buffs and for those that like interaction with others in a party type setting.

A lot of fun!
