About – Description
A question of scruples board game was created by Henry Makow in 1984 and is based on ethical dilemmas.
It’s a bluffing style game that is aimed at adults due to the 18+ age rating that takes around an hour to play and is suitable for up to 12 players.
Interestingly, this game featured in the first episode of Everyone Loves Raymond as well as Married…..with Children. The game became so popular upon release that the company could not produce them quick enough and that’s when Hasbro came in and took over the license of the game.
Who’s it best suited for?
As this is an adult only game it is perfect for parties and those who love bluffing-style games. Its simplicity makes it the ideal game to play when there is a large group of players involved.
Skill – Complexity
As this is a card based bluffing game, there is no real skill involved other than having the ability to bluff in front of others. It is a very simple game to play as it is card based and so, the complexity rating of the game is very low.
As this is a social game, players should feel comfortable playing games that require this kind of set up.
Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions
In the box you will find 245 dilemma cards, blank dilemma cards, 30 reply cards, 15 ballot cards and a storage tray.
Each player is given five yellow cards with each card containing a moral dilemma and they’re also given one red card that has either YES, NO or DEPENDS on it.
A player must read out a question from a yellow card to the person who they believe will respond with the answer that they have on their red card. The game provides an insight into how well players know each other but if they answer they provide matches the answer on the card, the player asking the question discards their red and yellow card and then takes another red card from the deck.
The first player to get rid of all of their yellow cards is classed as the winner.
Versions – Editions
The game has been released in numerous countries around the world while there has also been a 10th anniversary and Millennium Version released.
Likes & Dislikes
The way in which the game brings people together and shows the relationships between people is certainly something that players love. It’s also a fast and exciting game that can be picked up and played in just a few minutes. Despite this, many feel as though the game and the dilemmas are slightly outdated.
Final Thoughts
Scruples is clearly an intriguing and interesting classic game based on the dilemmas and the players playing the game. The idea is simple and that makes it an enjoyable experience although it could grow old over time.
It’s definitely a game of surprise that gets people talking.
