About – Description

Monikers is a fun-filled party game where you are guaranteed to have a laugh with your friends or family.

The aim of the game is to describe a famous celebrity. Sound simple? Yes, but there’s a twist! As the game progresses, each player steadily loses the ability to use words to describe their chosen celebrity. In the final round, you are not allowed to speak at all and can only use gestures – things are going to get really interesting!

Monikers, the crowdfunded Kickstarter game was published in 2015 and was well received, with a nomination for the 2015 Golden Geek Best Party Board Game awards.

Best Suited for Groups – Just for Pure Fun!

Gamers aged 17+ are recommended, primarily because younger players are unlikely to know many of the famous names in the game and the mild adult content.

You also need a wide repertoire of abilities to get the clues across and it’s content is mildly NSFW (Not Safe For Work).

This game is designed for 4-16 players, with a play time of around 30 minutes to an hour.

If you’re a fan of charades then you can’t go wrong with a game Monikers.

Skill/Complexity

This is a great party game and the only skills you need to play are a vivid imagination, along with a good knowledge of celebrity trivia.

Gameplay – How it Plays!

Monikers is excellent fun, and like all party games, the more people joining in, the better.

Families may struggle if there are people of different ages playing, although this can level the playing field when dealing with relatively new (or older) celebrity names. All in all the games are quick and simple.

Let the descriptions, gestures and charades commence!

Likes & Dislikes

thumbs up

  • Great progression from speaking to charades and gestures.
  • Easy to teach and learn.
  • Fast paced and fun.
  • Interactive as heck.
  • Replayability is good.
  • Perfect for the right group.

thumbs down

  • Need the right group up for laughs.
  • Adult content may not suit all.

Monikers has been widely accepted into the fraternity of party games as a laugh out loud experience that is guaranteed to get a party going.

The early rounds can feel a bit drawn out, but like with most party games, once people are warmed up, the fun really starts to flow.

Overall this is a fun experience designed to be silly and ensure a good time is had by all.

Expansions – Editions

One expansion was released for Monikers in 2017, called Twelve Hopelessly Stupid Fourth Rounds. There has also been 4 editions published which includes the 2018 edition.

Final Thoughts

Monikers is guaranteed to get your party started with people up and laughing in no time. With a big group, make sure you keep the game flowing as the early rounds can take a bit longer than you might think.

All in all, a simple game with a simple aim and losing the ability to speak in later rounds is a great twist on previous iterations.
