About – Description
Labyrinth is a puzzle game that was released in 1986 and made by German Psychologist Max J. Kobbert.
It’s a family and children’s game that is suitable for players aged 8 and over while it is suitable for up to four players.
With a 20 minute playing time, it is a quick and exciting puzzle based game that keeps the younger child interested throughout.
Who’s it best suited for?
This is a game that is suitable for families and those who enjoy puzzle-based games.
It’s a great game and educational as it will require younger players to work their way through the puzzle aspect of it, seeking out solutions in order to succeed.
Skill – Complexity
There is no real skill required to play Labyrinth other than the ability to tackle the puzzle that players are confronted with.
This is a tile-based game and so, players don’t have to think about strategies or tactics but they have to collect treasures by moving tiles in a certain way. So, Labyrinth is by no means a complex game, especially when you consider the age that the game is suitable for.
Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions
Included is a board, 34 maze cards, 24 treasure cards and 4 playing pieces.
Prior to the game starting, the Labyrinth is filled will all of the maze cards except for one……
This will create a number of pathways across the board in a random pattern as well as treasures.
The treasure cards are placed face down and dealt out to players so they all have an equal number of cards.
In their turn, players have to select the top card to find out the treasure they have been assigned. They then have to identify a pathway to the treasure and move along the route as much as possible……
To make it easier, the spare maze card can be pushed into the board at the located points. This then moves the maze cards, creating a new path and a spare card is pushed out at the opposite end.
Once a player has made it to their treasure goal, they have succeeded and they then move onto the next card in their treasure card pile. The game continues to play in this way until the first player collects all of their treasures.
Versions – Editions
Labyrinth has been released in many different countries although a number of special editions have been released including a Despicable Me Edition, a 25th Anniversary Edition and a Disney Labyrinth Edition.
Likes & Dislikes
The gameplay and the rules are simple and that appeals to players while the puzzle element of the game and the way in which children have to interact is considered to be important to parents.
As there are so many possibilities, players like the fact that no two games are the same.
Some find it a boring game as it involves pushing tiles through a board and so, the excitement disappears rather quickly.
