There was a lot to get through in the base game of Magic Maze as it had a progression of 7 main scenarios and then additional rules and scenarios after the first 7.
It was a lot of game scenarios and also a hell of a lot of fun. A great cooperative real time game with it’s own twists!
When we found out the Hidden Roles expansion was coming on the market we was delighted and had to check it out……………
Hidden Roles & How It Rolls
In the base game all the players have to steal items in the shopping mall and then leave the mall before the security captures you. With the expansion – one or more players may not want to leave and become traitors (turns cooperative into a sneaky semi-cooperative).
Players (Hero’s) need to find the traitors and get them out of the game while still getting around and out of the shopping mall.
You can accuse a player of being a traitor with the backing of other players to get them out of the game.
How do you know or suspect someone is a traitor?
They are going to do things against the game which you have to spot.
How To Play – Basics of Rules
The contents of the box includes 53 Role Cards, 1 “I’ve got my eye on you” card, 2 warning cards and the rules.
Similar to the base game – Hidden Roles has five difficulty levels which help you progress through the game. You ‘MUST’ play with 3 players or more!
You’ll start playing from at least scenario 3 on the base game with the expansion, and it ‘s best to use a level that you was successful at winning. There isn’t any point starting on a level you could not complete without the expansion.
So, you’ll begin with a set scenario from the base game and level 1 of the expansion.
Level 1 – There is a Traitor Among You
The first level gets you in the swing of it and it did help learning how it all pulls together with using scenario 3 of the base game first.
Hero or Traitor?
On the first level you deal Hero cards to each player, although one is a traitor card. These are shuffled and dealt then kept secret by each player.
Hero’s play as they would with the main game, although the traitor is trying to stop them. The goal of the traitor is simple………try and stop the hero’s without getting caught.
Accusing a Player (i.e., potential traitor)
This is a real fun part of the expansion.
You can point at who you think is the traitor and shout ‘TRAITOR’ at any point, however, you need all players to give you the thumbs up or a thumbs down.
If the accusation is agreed and gets a thumbs up by all players then the accused turns over their card. If the accused is a traitor then he/she is removed from the game and it continues. If he/she is not the traitor (i.e., has a hero card) then the real traitor wins the game and it ends.
That’s the meat of level 1 and the expansion. I don’t want to say more as it will just spoil the fun and the learning experience for you.
Lets just say the game gets crazier and extremely awesome…….
Final Thoughts
If Magic Maze floats your boat and you love the craziness of it then Hidden Roles is a must. The designer did a great job on this very well thought through and enjoyable expansion.
