About – Description
Yahtzee is a family dice type game that is suitable for players aged 6 years and over. It was created in 1956 by Edwin S. Lowe and is suitable for anything from 2-10 players although it is best played with 3-4. The game takes around 30 minutes to play.
Yahtzee makes a cool travel companion game because of having no large board unfold or components to set up.
Who’s it best suited for?
This is a family game due to its simplistic nature but it is a lot of fun for children while also educating due to the requirement to total up scores.
Skill – Complexity
The board game Yahtzee requires very little skill to play and it is not a complex game in any way. Players simply have to roll five dice and so, no prior knowledge is required.
Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions
Set up is extremely simple as it consists of five dice, one shaker and score sheets. Players have to roll the five dice three times before making 1 of 13 categories. There are a number of categories including four of a kind, full house, SM Straight and LG Straight.
Once all players have entered a score or a zero into all of the categories, the game finishes with all total scores being compared and the highest wins.
Versions – Editions
Despite the game being released in 1956, there have been many different editions released over the decades. Some of these include the Jaws 40th anniversary edition, the Doctor Who Dalek Collectors Edition, a Futurama Edition as well as travel editions.
Likes & Dislikes
Players of the Yahtzee board game love the simplicity of it although many only prefer to play it every once in a while as they find that it can become slightly boring. However, as it is a game that does not require any real thinking, players like the fact that it is a slightly relaxed game.
As mentioned, Yahtzee can make a great travel companion.
Final Thoughts

The 30-minute playing time makes it ideal for younger children and requires very little skill and no complexity, it is a great all-rounder.
